This is a very popular street food found around the Sunda region, western Java. Batagor is an acronym for Bakso Tahu Goreng (Fried Tofu Balls) although, it's not really a ball but more of a triangle shape. Tofu is stuffed with a mixture of savoury minced meat, steamed then coated with batter and fried; served with spicy sweet chilli-peanut sauce.
The ball is actually meatball. So the shape of the fried tofu has nothing to do with it. Meatball is translated to bakso in Indonesian. The word originated from Chinese but has been adopted by the Indonesian. This delicacy is so popular especially in Bandung. In fact, other cities have different variations of this food. In Tegal, Central Java, there is Tahu Aci. The tofu is not stuffed but is married to the longest side of the triangle shape. - 30 Jul 2014
