German Orange Gingerbread Cake

About this recipe: This is a great German Christmas recipe. Very different to the usual gingerbread- spicy and orangey!


Serves: 14 

  • 210g all purpose flour
  • 120g wholemeal flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 225g butter, softened
  • 440g packed brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 160ml honey, room temperature
  • 65ml orange liqueur
  • 250g sour cream
  • 120ml orange juice
  • 145g raisins
  • 110g blanched slivered almonds

  1. Mix together the flours, baking powder, and spices.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter with the brown sugar. Beat in the eggs, then the honey, orange liqueur, sour cream, and orange juice. Beat the flour mixture into the creamed mixture, and then stir in the raisins and almonds. Pour the batter into a greased and floured ring tin.
  3. Bake cake at 180 degrees C for 80 minutes, or until it tests done with toothpick. Transfer to a rack to cool.
