    About this recipe: Here's something out of the ordinary - spicy treacle biscuits with a hint of coffee are baked in long strips then cut into bars after baking.

    Makes: 42 

    • 125g butter
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 100g treacle or golden syrup
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 125ml warm coffee
    • 410g plain flour
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 185g sultanas

    1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease baking trays.
    2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Stir in the treacle and egg. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in warm coffee; stir into the treacle mixture. Combine the flour, salt, cinnamon and cloves; Gradually stir into the batter. Mix in sultanas. Form dough into 4 long strips lengthwise on the baking trays.
    3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Cool for 5 minutes on the baking trays, then cut each strip into bars while still warm.
