About this recipe: This is a traditional recipe for a Garam Masala spice mix, used in heaps of Indian dishes. You can make it in advance and store if for a few months in an air-tight container.


Serves: 16 

  • 1 tablespoon cardamom seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 stick of cinnamon smashed up
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  1. The easy way - put all the ingredients into a clean, dry coffee grinder or spice grinder and grind into a very fine powder.
  2. The longer way - put all the ingredients into a mortar and pestle and grind the living daylights out of them for 20 minutes till it reaches a fine powdery consistency.
  3. Store the powder in a dry, airtight container.
