About this recipe: This sweet sour pickled onion is a traditional accompaniment to murtabak.

Serves: 8 

  • 2 small red onions
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • red food colouring (optional)

  1. In a bowl , dilute sugar and salt in the vinegar. Peel onions and halve them lengthwise. Thinly slice the onions and put in vinegar mixture. Add a small drop of red food colouring. Stir and mix well.
  2. Set aside or chill in refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving.
