Mince with potatoes and peas

About this recipe: I first had mince at my Eurasian friend's house where I ate it with my hands, scooping up mouthfuls with French bread. In the U.K., mince is usually hidden under pastry or mashed potatoes and I doubt they use soya sauce! Add chopped or crushed tomatoes if you like.

Serves: 4 

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 500g minced pork or beef
  • 2 medium potatoes, diced
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon light soya sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark soya sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) water
  • 250g frozen peas, thawed
  • Fresh coriander, finely chopped

  1. In a large wok, heat the oil and stir and cook the garlic and onion until fragrant and the onions are translucent.
  2. Add the meat and break it up with a spatula. Cook until no longer pink.
  3. Add the potatoes, cinnamon stick and chilli powder, and season with soya sauces, and salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Add the water and stir to mix. Simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the peas. Taste and adjust seasonings, if desired.
  5. Sprinkle with coriander and serve hot with rice or French bread.
