About this recipe: Easy chicken in soya sauce gravy to have with a rice dish.

Serves: 4 

  • 1 kg chicken, cut into bite size pieces
  • 10 g allspice
  • 1/2 tablespoon (7 ml) dark soya sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 large onions, cut into thick slices
  • 2 carrots, cut into chunks
  • 2 red chillies, sliced
  • 3/4 cup water (200 ml) water
  • Oil for cooking
  • Ground Ingredients
  • 6 shallots
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 cm ginger
  • 15 g black peppercorns
  • 15 g white peppercorns

  1. Marinate chicken with dark soya sauce, Allspice and salt for 1 hour.
  2. Blend all the spice ingredients until fine. Heat a little oil in a pot and add the spices and fry until fragrant. Put the chicken in and fry for 3 minutes.
  3. Add onions and carrots and mix well. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, add the chillies and salt and simmer covered for another 15 minutes until the chicken is tender and cooked.
