May's applecake (aka Majs appelkaka)

About this recipe: This traditional style Swedish apple cake has a lovely rich texture and tastes divine, and is very simple to make. Served warm, with a good quality thick cream or vanilla ice cream, this dessert is guaranteed to please.


Serves: 6 

  • 2 large green apples
  • 1 & 1/3 cups plain flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Cinnamon powder
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons buttermilk
  • 150gms butter

Prep:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hr 

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C or 180 degrees C fan forced.
  2. Melt butter.
  3. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and buttermilk with melted butter. Pour mixture into a broad pie dish and bake for 8 minutes.
  4. Peel and slice apples.
  5. Remove dish from oven and slot apple slices into mixture.
  6. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and bake for a further 35 minutes.
