Yati’s yam cake

    Yam cake is a favorite with us. The fried yam, shallots and mushrooms make it very fragrant. We usually pan-fry rather than steam it.

    • ½ kg yam, diced
    • 6 dried mushrooms, soaked until soft, chopped
    • 1 cup dried shrimps, pounded
    • 6 shallots, sliced
    • 1 tsp salt + 2 tsp salt (separated)
    • Light soy sauce to taste
    • 1 bowl rice flour (about 500g)
    • 2 bowls water
    • A dash of pepper


    1. Fry together the yam, mushrooms, dried shrimps, shallots, 1 tsp salt and light soy sauce until the yam is cooked (ie. soft).
    2. Add in the rice flour, water, pepper and 2 tsp salt and stir together. Stir-fry until well-combined and a thick paste is formed. Flatten into a pan and steam for 1 hour on medium heat.
    3. Slice the yam cake and pan-fry until golden brown on both sides. Serve.
