Sweet & Sour Grouper

    This is a typical dish that you see in zichar stalls in Singapore. A bit more difficult than normal but tastes great and so much cheaper than eating out!

    • 2 groupers
    • A pinch of salt
    • A dash of pepper
    • Some cornflour (to coat fish)
    • Some cornflour (to coat fish) 1 clove garlic, sliced
    • A few slices ginger
    • 5 tbsp tomato sauce
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 big onion, sliced
    • 1 tbsp light soy sauce
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1 tomato, quartered
    • Juice of 2 limes
    • A handful mixed frozen vegetables, defrosted
    • 1 tbsp cornflour mixed with 1 tbsp water


    1. Rub salt and pepper onto the groupers to remove the smell. Coat with cornflour and deep-fry until golden on both sides.
    2. Place the garlic, ginger in a saucepan and stir-fry until fragrant. Add in the tomato sauce and water and stir to combine.
    3. Add in the big onion and wait for the water to boil. Once the water has boiled, add in light soy sauce, sugar and tomato.
    4. Once the sauce starts to boil again, add in salt, lime juice, mixed vegetables. Add in the cornflour-water mixture and stir until the sauce thickens.
    5. Pour over the deep-fried groupers. Serve.
